"[Erica and I went hiking with] Jim Yawman and his daughter, and good friend of Erica, Jessie. We hiked an Adirondack high peak that day, Big Slide Mt. It was Erica's first high peak. She has hiked a number of smaller mountains. It was a beautiful day. The Yawmans are old friends and used to be neighbors when we lived in Terrell Hills. In fact, Jessie may be going to Assateaque Island with us this month. On the way down the mountain we took a route that brought us along John's Brook, one of the loveliest, cleanest brooks (raging in the spring) I've ever seen. Our family has a favorite swimming hole on John's Brook that we try to go to once a year.

It's about a 2 mile hike to the swimming spot (ask Shane about it). There are some wonderful natural smooth rock slides in the brook that are just so much fun. Anyhow, the hike that day was about 9 miles total. I brought the kids part way up this mountain back when they were about 4 and 5 years old. One of the best things about this particular mountain is the views, which are magnificent and which you can enjoy along the way, as the trail goes up an over the Brothers, a series of smaller peaks on the way up to Big Slide."
