CAMBRIDGE -- You can change the names in the program, but Saturday proved that Cambridge is still Cambridge.

Seniors Greg Westcott and Adam Lajara churned out the yardage on the ground and Shea Bromirski connected through the air as the Indians rolled to a 46-13 Class C North opening day victory over Schuylerville.

Despite returning only a handful of starters, Cambridge looked in midseason form as it erupted for 434 yards total offense and 18 first downs against a veteran Black Horses team picked by coaches as a favorite this season.

"It was a little bit of a surprise," Indians coach Doug Luke said. "We got them early and found things we could do. We took advantage of their mistakes. It was a confidence booster, but that confidence can go away tomorrow. We've got Hoosick Falls next week."

Westcott led Cambridge with 101 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and Lajara added 76 yards and two scores on 17 rushes, as they took turns bashing through the Horses' defense on misdirection plays.

"Our line dominated -- we won the battle up front," said Bromirski, who completed six of 10 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns to Cameron Herrington. "We're going to have to keep working hard. This is just the beginning."

Schuylerville also moved the ball well, finishing with 310 total yards and 17 first downs. Anthony Casimano finished with a game-high 113 yards on 15 carries, and sophomore quarterback Austin Bateman added 77 yards on 15 rushes.

However, the Indians' defense stiffened when needed, halting the Horses on downs four times and forcing three turnovers.

Cambridge also recovered nicely from the opening kickoff, which Casimano returned 93 yards for a touchdown. The Indians responded with a crisp six-play, 65-yard drive capped by Lajara's 4-yard touchdown.

Schuylerville was stung twice in the second quarter. The Horses fumbled at the Cambridge 3-yard line, with Abe Andrew recovering for the Indians. Six plays later, Ryan Saunders scored on a 76-yard run off a double handoff for a 20-7 lead.

Then, with 20 seconds left in the first half, Herrington made a leaping catch at the goal line of Bromirski's 27-yard touchdown pass for a 27-13 halftime lead.

Cambridge then scored twice in the first 3:52 of the third quarter. On the first play of the period, Bromirski and Herrington connected on a 49-yard pass to the Horses' 1-yard line, and Bromirski dove in for the score.

Two plays later, Lajara picked off a Bateman pass at the Schuylerville 25, leading to Lajara's 1-yard touchdown for a 40-13 lead, putting the game out of reach. Westcott added a tackle-busting 19-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

"We had too many breakdowns," Schuylerville coach Greg O'Connor said. "You can't do that against a good club. We didn't tackle well -- when you have a good runner and poor tackling, that's going to hurt you. We'll get back to work this week and fix things."
