SCHUYLERVILLE -- Rarely at the end of a
47-6 high school football game can one find both
coaches with a sense of satisfaction as they leave
the field.
Greg O'Connor liked the way his
Schuylerville team stayed focused and within the
game plan after jumping out to a 19-0
first-quarter lead on its way to a lopsided
victory over Granville.
Mario Torres' Golden Horde didn't fold after
trailing by 41 points, grinding out its first
scoring drive of the season capped by Nick
Dunbar's 12-yard run.
"It may be a moral victory," Torres
said, "but you could see the excitement on
the sideline. We challenged them this week, and
they responded and didn't get shut out."
Schuylerville (3-1) needed one play -- a 63-yard
run from Shane Larkin -- to take a 7-0 lead 27
seconds into the game. Larkin said the Black
Horses didn't start celebrating.
"We stuck to the game plan," Larkin
said. "We didn't relax -- we wanted to jump
on them in the first quarter."
A 9-yard run by Larkin with 1:26 left in the
quarter was followed by Duke Ekblom's 10-yard
touchdown return of a fumble for a 19-0 lead.
Touchdown runs of 8 yards by Austin Bateman and 21
yards by Larkin in the second quarter had
Schuylerville ahead 35-0 at the half.
"We don't pay attention to the
scoreboard," O'Connor said. "We take the
approach that it's 0-0 every time we step on the
field."
The 0-0 approach was what Granville took into the
second half, answering Bateman's 3-yard touchdown
pass to Schuyler Thomas with a 73-yard drive
highlighted by a 29-yard run from Dunbar and a
31-yard completion from Andy Dirga to Korey Flint
before Dunbar scored 10 seconds into the fourth
quarter.
"We played them 12-6 in the second and third
quarter, and that's a good group of players over
there," Torres said.
Larkin finished with 126 rushing yards on eight
carries, Bateman added 60 on seven carries and
completed four of eight passes for 94 yardS --
three to Thomas for 83 yards. Brad Lyon chipped in
52 yards on four carries to pace Schuylerville,
which hosts Lake George next week.
Dunbar finished with 68 yards on 11 carries and
Dirga completed four of 12 passes for 66 yardS --
including three to Flint for 57 yards.
