| SCHUYLERVILLE
- After 48 minutes of play and 53 total
points on the scoreboard Friday night,
Schuylerville and Granville were both able
to walk off the field with possession of
Class C North Division victories - albeit
in much different ways.
For the Black Horses, it
was their third straight win, 47-6, in
their home opener, and for the Golden
Horde it was a moral victory as they
scored for the first time all season on a
12-yard run by Nick Dunbar to open the
fourth quarter. |

"It was a moral victory;
the second half was a 12-6 game," Granville
coach Mario Torres said. "We challenged our
kids to execute on both sides of the ball."
Granville (0-4) has been
outscored 172-6 in its first four games this
season, avoiding a shutout with Dunbar's romp
against Schuylerville's second team in the fourth
quarter.
"We were sluggish in the
first half," Torres said. "Offensively
they (Schuylerville) have good kids and
defensively they made some big plays. We just
haven't found our rhythm yet."
The Black Horses (3-1) were
marching to a different drum Friday night, led by
junior Shane Larkin's three touchdown runs up the
middle, including a 63-yard jaunt on the first
play from scrimmage for the quick strike, sending
a message to the Golden Horde that it would be
another long night. The 5-foot-11 215-pound back
finished with 123 yards on eight carries.
"I'm an inside runner and I
was able to cut outside," Larkin said.
"They didn't seem to be able to step up and
make tackles, they tried a lot of arm
tackles."
Larkin scored his second score
with 1:26 left in the first quarter, running
untouched up the middle from nine yards out
and the Schuylerville defense put
the Black Horses up seconds later.
The ensuing kickoff put the
Golden Horde deep in their own territory on the
6-yard line. On the second play from scrimmage, a
Granville back ran through the line, but was
stripped of the ball and junior Duke Ekblom came
up with the ball in mid-air and ran 10 yards into
the end zone for the 19-0 lead.
Even with a solid lead, the
Black Horses continued to press on. Schuylerville
quarterback Austin Bateman capped a five-play,
74-yard drive with an 8-yard run through the
middle into the end zone. His 46-yard pass and
catch to senior Schuyler Thomas set-up the scoring
opportunity and a 27-0 lead.
When Granville's second back of
the evening fumbled the football on its own
18-yard line, Black Horse senior John Martin
recovered to set up Schuylerville's next scoring
drive.
After two unsuccessful pass
attempts by Bateman, he simply went to the Black
Horses 'strength, Larkin, with an inside handoff
and he lumbered 21-yards through the middle for
his third score of the night.
With the game in hand, 35-0,
Schuylerville coach Greg O'Connor turned the field
over to his reserves for the remainder of the
contest.
"We tell them in practice
they're one game away from being a starter,"
O'Connor said. "Both of our captains were out
tonight, Sean Patrick and Anthony Casimano. No one
complains, whether they are a junior or a senior.
They came out, got some game time in and prepare
each week as a starter."
