Schuylerville may be the
second-highest scoring football team in Section 2,
but Friday night, the Black Horses' defense showed
their stuff. Schuylerville turned four turnovers
into touchdowns and routed Coxsackie-Athens 48-7 in
its Class C quarterfinal game, which was played in a
constant drizzle with heavy winds.
Schuylerville, 7-1 and winner of
seven straight games, will next face Watervliet or
Hoosick Falls in the semifinals; Coxsackie-Athens,
coming off an upset win over Voorheesville, drops to
5-3.
Schuylerville's first two
defensive gems broke the game open early, scoring
two touchdowns in less than 90 seconds. With
Schuylerville holding a 7-0 lead in the final
seconds of the first half, Coxsackie quarterback
Ryan Kane was sacked and the Horses' Shane Larkin
scooped up the ball and raced 48 yards for a
touchdown.
The score was called back due to a
blocking penalty, but two plays later, Larkin, now
at fullback, ran 33 yards for a touchdown. Three
plays later, Schuylerville's Schuyler Thomas picked
off a Kane pass and returned it to the Coxsackie
four-yard line. Schuylerville quarterback Austin
Bateman ran it in on the next play for a 21-0 lead
1:32 into the second period.
With Schuylerville's defense
constantly harassing Kane, the section's leading
running quarterback, Coxsackie never threatened
after that. Kane, who had run for over 850 yards in
the first seven games this year, had just two yards
rushing on 11 attempts through the first three
periods Friday night. For the night, Kane and Matt
Carlson combined for 35 rushes and just 56 yards.
In the third period, Schuylerville
used two more turnovers to score again.
For the night, Bateman led the
Schuylerville offense with 111 yards rushing and 119
yards passing. Casimano and Larkin combined for 98
yards rushing, but each only carried the ball once
in the second half. CLASS A Amsterdam 34, Averill
Park 14 Bryan Davey and Ben Miseikis rushed for a
combined 248 yards and five touchdowns to lead
Amsterdam (7-1) to a victory over Averill Park in
Class A football action on Friday night in
Amsterdam.
On a soggy field, Davey tallied
112 yards rushing and four touchdowns while Miseikis
added 136 yards and a touchdown. Amsterdam as a team
rushed for 302 yards on 30 carries.
Josh Fleming led the Averill Park
(2-6) ground attack with 182 yards on 28 carries.
The Warriors rushed the ball 59 times for 313 yards.
Averill Park's Tim Murdick and Ben Fil each had a
rushing touchdown.
With the game tied 7-7 early in
the second quarter, Amsterdam tallied 27 unanswered
points to go up 34-7 with just over eight minutes
left to play. The key play in that run was a 52-yard
touchdown carry by Miseikis.
Amsterdam will play on Friday
versus the winner of today's Burnt Hills versus
Gloversville matchup.
CLASS D Whitehall 22, Warrensburg
18 Cole Rocque rushed for 216 yards on 27 carries
and scored twice to lead Whitehall to a win over
Warrensburg in a Class D quarterfinal match-up in
Whitehall on Friday.
Rocque put the Railroaders (4-3)
up for good with 1-yard plunge in the third quarter,
his second touchdown of the night. Justin Phillips
added a 16-yard run in the fourth quarter and
finished with 13 carries for 70 yards.
David Boodman led the Burgers
attack with two touchdown runs of 65 and 3 yards. He
finished with 77 yards on only four carries. Brendan
Frye chipped in with six carries for 34 yards and
caught three passes for 62 yards. Warrensburg drops
to 3-5 on the season.
Whitehall will take on undefeated
Canajoharie (7-0) next week in the Class D semifinal
round.
