SCHUYLERVILLE -- A minor scoreboard glitch delayed the start of the second quarter. It turned out to be Schuylerville's only problem Friday night.

In control from the start, the host Black Horses rolled to a 48-7 Section II Class C quarterfinal win over the Coxsackie-Athens Indians.

With the triumph, Schuylerville (7-1) awaits the winner of today's contest between Hoosick Falls and Watervliet. Coxsackie falls to 5-3.

"The kids were focused - they came out and took care of business," Black Horse coach Greg O'Connor said. "We got up on them early and never let up. It was nice to see."

It actually took the Black Horses almost six minutes to draw first blood. Anthony Casimano did the honors for Schuylerville, capping an 80-yard march with a 2 yard run.

After the problem with the clock was tended to, the Black Horses went on a stampede. A 33-yard touchdown run by Shane Larkin started the run. Austin Bateman added a 4-yard scoring run and after quarterback hit Claeton Corsetti with a 5-yard touchdown pass, the hosts owned a 27-0 lead at intermission.

"They're a very, very good ball club," Indians coach Roy Deyo said. "They're probably without a doubt as good as anybody we've played all year. They play the game clean and they play the game hard."

Coxsackie did have its chances in the first half, particularly in the first quarter. When Dave Dingman caught a pass deflected by a Schuylerville defender, the Indians were in business at the Black Horse 4-yardline.

However, the Black Horse defense was equal to the task and the Indians turned the ball over on downs.

"We had our chances," Deyo said. "I told our kids the only way we could play with these kids is we had to play errorless football. We certainly didn't do that tonight. We had too many turnovers."

The Schuylerville defense forced five Indian turnovers, including three interceptions. One of those interceptions was returned by Duke Ekblom 13 yards for a touchdown with 1:24 left in the third quarter, capping the night's scoring for the Black Horses, who took a 41-0 lead into the final period.

"It's all about momentum," O'Connor said of the Indians' miscues. "Not that we didn't have momentum, but they can deflate the other team when things don't do their way."

Coxsackie avoided the shutout when quarterback Ryan Kane hit Tyler Pascuzzi with a 52-yard scoring pass at the 9:19 mark of the fourth quarter.

Bateman was the workhorse for the Black Horses, taking game rushing honors with 120 yards on 11 carries. The sophomore also was good on 6 of 11 passes for 130 yards."

"I just got lucky," Bateman said. "I did all right, but if it wasn't for the line, none of that would have happened. I guess it was just my night tonight."

The Black Horses finished the night with a 379-269 cushion in total offense, 249 of those yards coming on the ground.

"We said if it gets real messy, we like our offensive line," O'Connor said. "We like our chances if it's going to be won in the trenches, which it usually is any way."
