SCHUYLERVILLE - There are hidden gears to Austin Bateman.
During the week, the Schuylerville Black Horses quarterback does his thing in practice; but when it’s game time, Bateman can suddenly fly.
On a rainy Friday night, Bateman torched the Hoosick Falls defense, rushing for 205 yards and four touchdowns on nine carries to lead
Schuylerville to a 36-0 Class C North victory.
Bateman sprinted for touchdowns of 46, 23, 37 and 51 yards as the Black Horses improved to 2-0 in the division and overall.
“When he’s got the ball, he’s got more gears,” Schuylerville head coach Greg O’Connor said. “He doesn’t have those gears during the week,
but they show up on Friday night.”
“It’s all preparation,” said Bateman, a junior and third-year starter. “It’s all how Mr. (Brian) Ekblom prepared our offensive line. They did all the
work, I just made the moves. I wish they could have those touchdowns.”
As outstanding as the Schuylerville offense was in putting up 367 total yards, the Horses’ defense was even tougher, holding Hoosick Falls (1-1, 1-1) to 102 yards as they registered their second straight shutout.
Panthers quarterback Kevin Woods, who passed for 402 yards against Cambridge last week, was held to 36 yards on 8-for-21 passing. He
was intercepted three times — twice by Claeton Corsetti, once by Duke Ekblom.
“Our whole focus was getting after their quarterback and making sure all our coverages were on the same page,” O’Connor said. “I was very
happy with our secondary.”
“They beat us up front, and we didn’t execute at all,” Hoosick Falls head coach Ron Jones said. “They play very fast, and our guys were
waiting around to feel it out instead of committing to blocks.”
Schuylerville opened the scoring midway through the opening period, as Shane Larkin scored from 5 yards out — four plays after a holding
call negated an apparent 33-yard touchdown run by Bateman.
Bateman was just getting warmed up. On the second play of the second quarter, he broke outside and raced 46 yards down the right sideline
for the touchdown for a 14-0 lead.
The Black Horses got the ball back at midfield on Corsetti’s second interception of the night. Four plays later, Bateman scampered around left
end for 23 yards and the score. On their next possession, Bateman outran the defense for his 37-yard touchdown, on the identical play.
Dan Ladd, the Horses’ 265-pound fullback/placekicker, booted a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the first half for a 30-0 lead. Brad Lyon
had set up the field goal with a 69-yard dash to the Hoosick Falls 9.
Bateman tacked on his 51-yard scoring run late in the third quarter, racing down the right sideline again.
“They were the same play, every time,” Bateman said. “I think they were biting on Shane because he’s the big guy. But you could drive a truck
through those holes.”
“We’re not big up front, we’re not going to push them over, but we’ll be aggressive and attack them, and give our backs a chance,” O’Connor
said. “Our whole approach was much better this week. We came out clicking from the get-go.”
