Maureen Larkin Wright - A One-Room School House

This picture is of the one-room school house in Austerlitz, NYwhere Maureen began her academic career

Austerlitz, NY

Every few years during a New York/ New England visit, I drive through Chatham and sometimes Austerlitz, Spencertown, Red Rock, East Chatham, etc. just to be sure they're still there. Perhaps five years ago, I stopped at a roadside stand at what perhaps was formerly May Ferry's old farm and chatted with the owner for a few minutes. No longer do I remember a single name we exchanged but it was an enjoyable conversation. I parked across the road in front of the house we used to live in and took a few pictures of the place, then pulled into the driveway when I realized someone was watching me. The current owner, Pat Someone (a former classmate) was hobbling around on a casted leg and with an oversized beer gut preventing his shorts from ever finding his waist. I really wanted to see the inside of the house.

I think I remember it clearly but am not positive... but it was clear that they were not ready for "company". I took a couple of snapshots of the school also. I sent a copy of the pictures to Maurie to see if he could remember the places.

Yes, Maurie and I started first grade there but never finished. Ruptured appendix before the advent of Penicillin earned me a lenghty vacation in the hospital and put a big crimp in my social and academic life. How many other kids do you know who failed the first grade?
