An Earthquake in my Back Yard

Dear Family,

In the event that the 4pm earthquake did not make the national news, here is my version of the 4.5 Richter scale meteorological event, the epicenter of which was about 30 miles west of Richmond.

On my way back to the house from the shed, a very loud rumble started and my thought was that a convoy of really heavy dump trucks was approaching.

But the rumble became a roar, an almost frightening roar such as one would expect from two supersonic jets landing in the trees next to your property. That is what I thought was occurring.

Then I heard at least two deep booms as the ground under my feet became unstable. Armageddon, I wondered, as Votan quickly slid past me and up onto the side porch, his ears laid flat against his head, or is it an earthquake?

Although it lasted only 15-20 seconds, it was quite unsettling and I recognized I was totally powerless to do anything about it. The 4:30 news flash confirmed that it indeed had been an earthquake.

Some people say that you can get used to the rumblings of earthquakes.

I don't think so.

Goodnight,
