I am planning on getting my
degree in Engineering (Sweet Briar does not give degrees in the
different types of engineering so it's just engineering) with a
minor in Government (poly-sci at most institutions). I want to
work as a professional engineer but I also would love to work in
Washington. I'm not entirely sure. I just know that I would like
to help people and too often I see on the news or read in the
paper about science and technology that is blacklisted on Capitol
hill by politicians who have law degrees. They did not study (some
of them 30-40-50 years ago) to be scientists and so they have to
hire PACs or take the word of lobbyists who have there own agendas
to even completely understand the issues. And I don't know how to
fix this but I know I want to. And I know I want to work for the
greater good, and somehow pushing forward with urban sprawl (while
fulfilling a great need in our society) just doesn't seem like
what I want to spend my life doing. And the greatest way that I
know to effect society is through the institutions that control it
or through the technology in which we live our lives... and that's
Government and Engineering.
